Tuscan trip 9: Florence 4

(Florence, Italy - April 21st, 2005)

A wonderful day so far. I've spent more than four hours in the Uffizi. There was a long queue when I got here, but as I had reserved a ticket, I was inside within minutes. The audio guide was good - it made me appreciate works of art that I would perhaps normally walk by. I've made a short list of my favorites which I will present shortly...

After seeing the 2nd floor, I went to the cafeteria to have something to eat. €9 for a small pizza and a cup of coffee is not exactly cheap, but all in all the Uffizi experience cost me less than €25, and I'd gladly pay twice that.

I've read that the gallery would be crowded but it wasn't. I had all the space I wanted to see works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and so on from any angle I wanted - which was more than I expected.

In all: wonderful. But now I desperately neeed some rest...

Here's a list of my Top Seven favorites (in no particular order):

Leonardo's Annunciazione:

Vasari's Lorenzo il Magnifico

Michelangelo's The Holy Family

El Greco's Saint John the Evangelist and Francis

Gerrit Berckheyde's The Groote Markt in Haarlem

Rembrandt's Self-portrait as a Young Man

Caravaggio's Sacrifice of Isaac
